I was reading news about products recalled for melamine, when I saw the name of the chocolate that I have in my fridge, the Dove Hazelnut, Almond and Raisin. Sad to say, I have to throw these chocolates now because it has been tested positive for melamine.

What is Melamine?

Melamine, the chemical that has tainted milk formula in China and made thousands of children ill, may have been part of the food chain in China for a long time, say food experts. But the health effects of long-term exposure in adults are unclear.

So far, 53,000 infants have fallen ill after drinking formula milk with melamine. Four babies have died, 13,000 have been hospitalised and 104 are in a critical condition with kidney stones caused by the adulterant. A girl in Hong Kong has become the first case of poisoning outside China. The makers of baby formula require their milk to have a high protein content, which they determine by measuring its nitrogen content. But farmers who produce milk that doesn’t meet this standard can beat the test by mixing it with melamine powder.

The chemical (C3H6N6), a white, crystalline powder used to make plastics, fertilisers and cleaning products, has a high nitrogen content and so makes the milk appear high in protein. Health experts say ingesting a small amount of melamine poses no danger, but larger amounts of the chemical can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure. Infants are particularly vulnerable.

Chinese suppliers trying to boost output are believed to have diluted their milk, adding melamine because its nitrogen content can fool tests aimed at verifying protein content.

Milk Products Positive for Melamine

Philippine Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said  Greenfood Yili Fresh Milk and Mengniu Drink, which have labels written in Chinese character,  Jolly Cow Slender High Calcium Low Fat Milk were found positive for melamine contamination which are toxic industrial chemical.

Duque said a total of 49 other milk brands and milk products, mostly manufactured in China, were cleared of melamine contamination. The health department’s testing of Chinese milk and milk products was prompted by a scandal in China where four babies died and more than 53,000 fell ill from drinking infant formula contaminated with melamine.

Melamine is used as a binding agent and coating for particle, fibre and laminated board. It is also used to make fertilizer. The Philippines has banned the sale and importation of Chinese milk and milk products after the scandal broke out over fears these were contaminated with melamine.

White Rabbit Creamer Candy

The Malaysian Health Ministry has directed that White Rabbit Creamer Candy and Ego White Rabbit Creamy Candy be removed from the shelf and destroyed after tests found that they are melamine positive.

Malaysian Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said laboratory tests showed that Ego White Rabbit Creamy Candy samples showed that the content of melamine was 135 parts per million (ppm) compared with 2.5ppm, the level permitted by the Health Ministry.

Samples of White Rabbit Creamy Candy have been found to contain more than 50 times the permitted level of melamine.

Anyway, I decided to throw also my Meiji Macadamia Chocolate Nuts because its from Meiji Company which has been recalled also by Department of Health.

So goodbye my favorite Chocolates and White Rabbit Creamy candies.

WHO or some other health organization will release a comprehensive list of all recalled products tainted with melamine, but until then here is an updated list compiled from various sources on the internet.

While many of the brands listed below are available worldwide, so far it appears that only Asian products are affected - therefore if you live in Europe or North America, your Snickers bar is probably safe to eat.
