Right after Holy Week 2008, I had the chance to see and experience the beauty of Boracay Island in Philippines. Boracay is a tropical island located approximately 315km (200 miles) south of Manila. It is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.

The easiest and fastest way going to Boracay is to fly direct from Manila to Caticlan, Aklan which takes only 35 minutes. We took the Asian Spirit Airlines and only paid 6thousand pesos or $150 for the round trip flight from Manila - Caticlan, and Caticlan - Manila.

Upon arrival in Caticlan Airport, we took a tricycle ride to Caticlan Jetty Port Terminal. From here we took a 15 minute boat ride to the island of Boracay.

What to do in Boracay? Boat trips around the island, windsurfing, diving, sailing, horseback riding, snorkeling, golf, mountain biking, jet skis, water skis, speedboats and banana boats.

Island Hopping

I enjoyed the island hopping and snorkeling, it was my first time to see corals and fishes under the sea. We paid 2,500 pesos or $60 for the 3 hour tour to islands around Boracay and did snorkeling in the middle of the sea.

Even if I do not know how to swim , I felt safe because we used life jacket provided by the local boatmen. We just used our own snorkel gadgets. And thank you to our boatman who took this picture while we are in the water.

If you like shopping in Boracay, there is the D’ Mall Shopping Center which is located in open air alleys. There are tiny shops which sells charming knick knacks, clothes and the best beach wears. I bought Boracay souvenirs like T-shirts, fridge magnets, and shell earrings.

The D’ Mall Shopping Center, Boracay is not only famous for the clothes and accessories but they have the best ice cream parlors and restaurants lined side by side. There are also church, barber shops, dental clinics, drugstore, a digital print shop, sport shops, airline agencies, banks, atm machines, spa and salon, and internet cafes.

What To Eat in Boracay? There are four miles of beachfront restaurants with every kind of food you can imagine. The gourmet may be suprised at the treat that awaits in Boracay. Numerous restaurants, mostly located right at the beachfront, serves sumptuous international cuisine - American, Singaporean, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, French, Spanish, Italian, Indian, German, Korean, Thai and Filipino. Seafood dripping fresh straight from the sea; fresh fruits and juices-heavenly to taste! Wine and liquor choice is wide as well. During lunch and dinner times, there are restaurants that offer buffet meals, so I really like going to different restaurants every night and enjoyed the “eat-all-you-can” dinner from 300 pesos to 500 pesos ($6 - $12).

Bars also abound in the island, and are one of the favorite tourist nights. Nightlife in Boracay pulsates with the best in aboriginal music. The bars and pubs plays country tunes as the bands here create magic with their native drums and string instruments. Live music is a major attraction in the nightlife of Boracay. Most of the bars and pubs here have their own bands. Several resorts in Boracay have skilled jockeys to play the perfect beats to dance to. When we were there on March, there is a disco every night on the front beach. If we like to go away from loud music, we walked to the nearby resorts and listen to the entertainers singing mellow music on stage in front beach.

White Beach is the main tourism beach. It is a bit over four kilometers long and is lined with resorts, hotels, lodging houses, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. In the central portion, there is a footpath known as the Beachfront Path separating the beach itself from the establishments located along it. Several roads and paths connect the Beachfront Path with Boracay’s Main Road, a vehicular road which runs the length of the island.

A number of accommodation types are scattered all over the island, ranging from luxurious hotel types to budget, spartan rooms. Guests can also choose according to location–Station 3 is where most of the cheaper lodgings are located, while Station 2 is meant for those who want to be within close proximity of the bars. Station 1, meanwhile, is where you can find the more isolated accommodations, offering peace and quiet to those looking for a respite from the usual action-packed Boracay night scene. These are usually for the more upscale vacationers. Boracay is the site of a world-class 18-hole par 72 golf course designed by Graham Marsh. In addition, Boracay now has in excess of 350 beach resorts with more than 2,000 rooms ranging in quality from five-star to budget accommodations, so tourists are sure to find whatever they are looking for.

During our 1 week stay in Boracay, we chose to stay in Sandcastles Resort. We made a booking through internet and a girl staff from the resort fetched us from the Caticlan airport going to the boat which took us 15 minutes ride to the island and to our native bungalow with balcony, a hammock and rattan furnitures.

The native-style crafted bungalows are decorated using bamboo, rattan furnishings and terra cotta tiles. The Sandcastles Resort can be found on the beachfront in the middle of the Boracay White Beach. For sure, i would like to go back to this paradise island to enjoy the beauty of nature.
